Keeping the .indd files alongside the PDF

A PDF kept alongside its .indd file

When you export to PDF, you can keep the underlying InDesign files too – handy when you need both the finished PDFs and the editable source.

Turn on "keep InDesign files"

When exporting to PDF, turn on keep InDesign files. DataMergeStudio then also saves the InDesign documents it generated, alongside the PDFs.

Why keep them

  • Edit by hand – fine-tune a few merged documents after the run.
  • Build a book – an InDesign book can only be made from InDesign files, so this is one way to enable continuous page numbering across the run.
  • Archive editable source next to the finished output.

If you don’t need the PDFs at all – only the editable documents – use the InDesign export instead, which produces the InDesign files directly.
